FAQ
The Overlandies Shop
What are the advantages of a The Overlandies lift top?
Our do-it-yourself kit allows our customers to have an inexpensive yet very high quality retractable roof, which is manufactured under fair working conditions in Germany. The customer saves a large part of the costs that would be incurred for an elevating roof plus installation from other manufacturers by performing the installation work himself.
Other advantages:
- Buy the original, 100% Made in Germany. Our proprietary development has been on the market for several years and has proven itself countless times with our customers. Worldwide on already all 5 continents
- Maximum standing height and a lying width of 133 cm
- Our lifting roof runs in line with the A-pillar and raises your Defender by just 14 cm
- Low weight of only 45 kg. This is especially noticeable offroad positively
- Our aluminum frames are made in Germany from laser-cut aluminum profiles (3.0 mm material thickness) using the TIG welding process. High-quality weld seams are a matter of course for us.
- Design waterproof HD aluminum profile hinge. With our lifting roof, you do not need a rubber cover in front of the hinge
- The original roof shell remains undamaged and is not shortened (the conversion is therefore 100% retrofittable!)
- High-quality tent in the color of your choice, with 3 huge window openings, 100% Made in Germany
- Our tents are made of breathable and very pleasant to the touch tarpaulin fabric from the yachting sector; we attach great importance to excellent fabric quality. You will look in vain for Airtex materials or similar. You feel comfortable in our tents and don’t have the feeling of sleeping in a plastic tent
- Our tent is waterproof and yet breathable. All zippers (YKK) of our tents are covered with fabric from the outside and thus protected from rain. All seams are also additionally waterproof sealed from the inside with a special seam sealing tape. All windows can be opened and rolled up and are equipped with a high quality mosquito net. Our tent is riveted to the lifting roof frame by means of piping strips and aluminum profiles, and thus does not lose its pretension and shape. This type of tent fastening has many advantages over other fastening methods such as Velcro, especially in windy conditions.
- All supplied fastening materials (exclusively stainless steel V2A/V4A) are included in the set
- Any standard roof rack can be used, thanks to individually selectable strength of the gas pressure dampers
- can be registered by individual acceptance without any problems, a parts certificate is not necessary. We are happy to advise you
- Our concept also allows the customer – if necessary – to make individual changes or modifications. The material thickness of 3.0 mm allows the attachment of, for example, awnings. The closed frame construction of rectangular profiles also offers the possibility of invisibly routing cabling within the lifting roof frame. For example for solar cables and 12V charging sockets
- We are available by phone 7 days a week – before and during installation – and can be contacted by you
What kind of tent fabric is used?
We only use high-quality tarpaulin fabrics from the yachting sector for our tents. You won’t find Airtex and similar fabrics here.
All tents Made in Germany
The saddlery we trust makes each tent by hand. With the most modern machines and expert knowledge, our tents are unique in shape and design. And best of all: you can choose the color of your tent individually in black or anthracite
Arguments that speak for themselves:
- waterproof and immune to rust stains, rotting and insect damage
- very pleasant, robust and warm feel (no thin and rustling tent material)
- very good weather resistance and durability (high accuracy of fit even after years!)
- very breathable (water vapor permeability from inside to outside over 400g/m2)
- excellent protection against UV radiation
- bactericidal and fungicidal, gives mold no chance
- dirt, grease and oil repellent, very easy to clean
- salt water resistant
- excellent dimensional stability and tear resistance
- Water pressure resistance
What is the delivery time for a retractable roof?
Is a bed construction included in the delivery?
We offer an optional beechwood slatted frame that can be folded up using a gas pressure damper or a 2-part bed base system made of CNC-manufactured composite panels.
The hardness of the beechwood slatted frame (Made in Germany) can be adjusted and it also has high-quality shoulder grooves. The slatted frame can also be folded upwards using a gas pressure damper.
Our 2-part bed system has a total length of 210 cm. With this system, the 2 bed plates can be pushed on top of each other (towards the front of the vehicle). When the lifting roof is closed, you have sufficient seat height to sit upright comfortably inside the vehicle. This is especially advantageous, for example, if you do not want to open the roof due to storm/storm and have to stay inside the vehicle for a certain time, or if you do not want to be obviously noticed as a camper in some places and want to spend the night with the roof closed in the lower area of the vehicle.
Independent of the optionally available bed systems:
Our lifting roof is pre-equipped for any type of bed construction. The supplied aluminum L-profiles form the support surface for any individual bed construction, for example, made of 18 mm multiplex board. Any individual bed construction is possible with our kit and is subject to the individual request of each customer.
This means you can design your own bed construction to suit your needs and sleeping habits.
What is the possible bed area?
The clear width inside our poptop is 133cm. Thus, a mattress width of almost 130cm is possible. However, experience has shown that a mattress width of 120cm is ideal. This leaves sufficient space between the tent wall and mattress and allows moisture/condensation to evaporate. Despite a mattress width of 120 cm, you have the lying comfort of 133 cm, because you hardly rest on the outer edge of the mattress. You can order matching foldable mattresses in various firmness levels (soft, standard, hard) from us as an option. Our mattresses are 100% made in Germany and are free from toxic ingredients.
With a mattress length of 200 cm, 210 cm has proven to be the ideal length for the bed base, so that you have a support option in front of the mattress when climbing up and down and at the same time a storage option for a book, cell phone or glasses, etc.
Are the lifting roof frames shipped powder-coated/painted?
Experience has shown that most of our customers want a paint finish in the color of the car, so our lifting roof frames are delivered to our customers unpainted. We always recommend our customers a 2-component paint structure, powder coating is not recommended for quality reasons.
Other reasons for the lifting roof frames delivered by us unpainted:
Unfortunately, the manufacturing accuracy and gap dimensions of Land Rover Defender vehicles leave a lot to be desired, so it is often necessary to place the lifting roof frame on the vehicle several times before assembly in order to transfer the attachment points to our lifting roof frames. As every Defender is “different” (unfortunately it is often a matter of a few millimeters!) we do not pre-drill our frames. Our customers have to mark the attachment points of their vehicles on the lifting roof frame themselves and then drill the holes themselves. This is the only way to achieve a clean and precise result.
Unlike other manufacturers, we have deliberately decided against so-called “slotted holes” and “counter plates” on and in our lifting roof frames, even if this means additional work during assembly. Only with precision do we achieve a result that is good for our sensibilities.
Therefore, we recommend painting the lifting roof frame only after the holes have been drilled and adjusted on the vehicle. This means that nothing stands in the way of a high-quality paint finish (e.g. in the color of the car).
Why is powder coating not recommended?
Can I attach an awning to the retractable roof?
Is the mounting material included in the scope of delivery?
Can I register my elevating roof?
Of course you can have your The Overlandies pop-top roof registered in your Defender’s vehicle documents. This is done on an individual basis, we will be happy to advise you.
Generally speaking, with a Land Rover Defender, its ladder frame construction means that the body and roof are not a contributing component of these vehicles. The requirements for registration of the roof are a professionally executed attachment to the vehicle and a minimum radius of 2.5 mm on all external edges of the component. This radius is maintained or exceeded on our lifting roof frames. It is best to contact a testing company of your choice before the conversion and discuss the project so that nothing stands in the way of the conversion and registration. We will also be happy to send you copies of vehicle registration documents in which the roof is already registered.
How long does the assembly take?
How will the retractable roof be shipped to me?
You can either collect the retractable roof from our company in person or we can send it by freight forwarder. The dimensions of the packed frame (packed in a disposable wooden pallet): 3.1m x 1.5m x 0.3m
Throughout Germany, freight forwarding costs on average between 150 and 250 euros, depending on the delivery address. The delivery costs will be invoiced separately if delivery is requested.
Assembly instruction
Our assembly instructions are very detailed and consist of a 54-page PDF file. We will send you these by e-mail after your purchase.
The instructions are very detailed and each step is described in great detail. Many photos and illustrations will help you to install the lifting roof on your vehicle step by step.
